Illustration Friday: Ocean

Make that Illustration Should-Have-Finished-By Friday!! Although I began early and adopted a simple style for my little doodle, end-of-semester activities took precedence and I missed the deadline. Saturday's routine of weekend chores afforded me some time to grab a Sharpie and complete the zentangle patterns in the water while waiting for the laundry cycle to finish!

Illustration Friday: Snow

An aptly timed topic; today classes were canceled for snow so I was excited to make a rare contribution to IF! I could not decide if I like the red fox or the unpainted monochromatic image better, so both are here.

Sadly, my scanner also decided to take the day off so the white balance is more than a little off on the photos.

The Welded Armadillo

My latest art adventure: 16 hours of welding class at Lakeshore Technical College! I have a new appreciation for the work of welders. The hours squinting through the welding mask wearing heavy gloves and a size XXL leather jacket, working in a tiny booth and just hoping not to make anything explode on the basis of my blatant inexperience, were just the dose of creative rejuvenation I needed.

Van Gogh's Pumpkin

Happy Halloween!

I feel sheepish trying to pass my jack-o-lantern off as "my" art-- my respects to Vincent van Gogh for his mastery and inspiration! Nonetheless, my own imagination is currently engaged in designing lessons to challenge and inspire my own fantastic students. Hoping to CREATE a little more this coming winter!

Yesterday I had the privilege of attending a letterpress workshop at the Hamilton Woodtype Museum in Two Rivers, Wisconsin with a small group of art friends. The day flew by as we selected, arranged, and printed woodtype to our hearts' delight. My biggest regret is that eight hours was just not long enough!

Inspired by this article on NPR, I focused my printing on this palindrome square.

The Blues

Perk of friendship with the photography teacher: spending a summer afternoon developing cyanotypes in the sun!

Cuckoo Collage

The tiny schnickers of paper on and surrounding my desk are a testament to this week's work. We had a rainy morning or two that kept me indoors, and somewhere along the way, a project was born that turned out to be rather a time commitment. The process of collage is consuming, and leaves me wondering whether it might be more fun to create than to look at, in the same way that a puzzle becomes less interesting once all the pieces are fit together. And although I did not keep track of actual hours spent, I will say that a season or two of Doctor Who came and went along the way.

The collage pieces are cut from painted paper and attached to a 16"x20" piece of masonite.
